Proper piercing aftercare is essential for safe healing and avoiding infection. Any procedure that breaks the skin can allow germs to enter the body. The main cause of infection or irritation during the healing process is touching your piercing or jewelry with unwashed hands.
Hands and fingers come into contact with germs on doorknobs, counters, money, food, and many other surfaces. The most important rule for your piercing is: do not touch the area or your jewelry with dirty fingers. If you must touch the piercing, always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap and dry them with a clean paper towel. Avoid using your personal towels as they may carry bacteria.
Some minor symptoms are normal during healing. You may notice slight bruising, redness, or swelling for three to seven days. It is also common to see a yellowish-white fluid (lymph) around the jewelry. This dries and forms a crust, which is not pus and is a normal part of the healing process. Following these steps carefully helps your piercing heal safely and maintain a healthy, clean appearance.
Heal Your Tattoo Safely
Following proper tattoo aftercare is crucial for healthy healing and vibrant results. Your artist will wrap your fresh tattoo before you leave the studio, and this wrap should stay on until you arrive home. Once you are ready to clean the area, start by washing your hands thoroughly with an antibiotic soap. Clean your tattoo gently with mild soap and lukewarm water. Always use your fingertips and move in a light circular motion. Avoid washcloths or towels during this step because their fibers can get caught in the tattoo and may lead to irritation or infection.
After cleaning, pat the area dry with a soft, lint-free paper towel. Apply a fragrance-free, dye-free, alcohol-free hand lotion to keep the skin moisturized. Use only a thin layer—similar to what you would use on your hands—because a greasy or shiny coating can prevent the tattoo from breathing properly.
